Is AI Really That Impressive?

First-hand analysis of popular AI chatbots and image generators like ChatGPT and DALL-E reveals they have tremendous potential but still substantial limitations compared to human capabilities.

Humans engaged in a futuristic work setting that looks like a circuitry board loaded with electronic components, personal work space, and AI.
Demystifying and Leveraging AI

The latest wave of AI started to lightly lap against mainstream beaches in 2022. By early 2023, it seemed like I was hearing from everyone about different tools, conversations on AI ethics, and how AI would destroy humanity.

I originally got involved with AI tools for my Strangers You Know podcast in the summer of 2022. By the end of the year, I had been regularly trying various tools (with a wide range of results) and I wanted to swap stories on everyone’s foray into the ever-deepening rabbit hole of AI

If you have access to this post, chances are you’ve heard more about ChatGPT than “non-human biologics” or even Taylor Swift. I wanted to take share some of my experiences with taking some of these tools out for a test drive and see if they lived up to expectations.

I started with ChatGPT itself - it was entertaining enough and could produce paragraphs of passable text on demand. (Cue the warnings of AI making human writers obsolete!) But when I tried asking more complex questions, the responses felt a bit hollow and lacking in nuance. Useful, but still very chatbot-like.

DALL-E was next - the AI image generator. I prompted it with: "a penguin playing guitar in front of the Eiffel Tower." The results were cute but in a nonsensical, “how-would-I-actually-use-this” sort of way. The technology is impressive, but it seemed clear there are still limitations.

So for now, I'm not quite ready to bow down to our supposed AI overlords. The tools are advancing rapidly and have great potential. But we have a way to go before AI truly rivals humans in creative roles. Though I'll definitely keep testing it out - sometimes even wrong or bizarre AI outputs can spark interesting ideas.

FUTURE CONVERSATIONS: In future posts, I will get into more detail about how my experiences with AI improved, how I learned to use the right tool for the job, and will also give some early tips and ideas on how you can leverage AI in a meaningful way. Ongoing conversations will also include trying to understand what AI actually does, how it does it, and the pros, cons, ethical considerations, and ongoing concerns of what it means to those of us with “Genuine” Intelligence.

As the technology and tools themselves continue to advance at a phenomenal rate, we will have a lot to talk about. For now, I would love to hear from each of you.

  • Have you played around with any AI tools yet?

  • What has your experience been like so far?

  • Any luck getting useful results?

  • Any epic fails?

Please share your feats and fumbles as we work together to demystify AI and learn how to leverage it in beneficial ways.

FYI - I created the graphic for this article with Midjourney and even used Claude 2.0 to help outline the articles in this series.
